One of the most aggressive directives clients take on in the VIP Coach program is getting rid of their office over about a year’s time. This really freaks them out at first.
If you think you need an office to be an entrepreneur, think again. Your office looks like your head, and at best it’s a snake pit that’s out to bite you, eat you alive, and suck you dry like a leech. The reason you have an office is to marry your identity to your business. Your office tells you that you’re important and provides you the illusion that you “have a business.” If you didn’t, you would lose yourself and forget you have a business, right? WRONG!
Everything in your office, 99% of it is STUFF. Stupid Things You Fire First. Most of what your office gears you to do is everything that doesn’t make you any money—STUFF! Paperwork. Follow up. Service Work. Email. Reports. Answer Questions. Offices are loaded with $10 an hour work. Everything about it makes you a reactive creature. The moment you sit down in an office, you’re targeted!!! The best advice: GET LOST. Don’t have an office.
You get results out of the office. If you look at your schedule, the lunch you just had was the best money making activity in your day with your friend Jack. But your office is geared to take you out of the transformative, value creation centric encounters where the action is. So, where do you get work done? Here’s what you do:
Buy a laptop computer. Only put the software related to marketing activity in it, nothing else. This laptop is a mobile results machine to support you wherever you are, to completely mobilize you to make calls, handle marketing message and sales related elements, nothing else. No instant messengers, no time wasters. Just your database info, your email and that’s it. Second, get your car suped up, turn it into a mobile results machine. Format the trunk with all your collateral, leave behinds, forms so that wherever you are, you’re ready to have valuable conversations.
Schedule a 30 minute call with your assistant(s) each day to check in and review your top 6 priorities for the day and what their involvement is to be in getting them accomplished. Unless someone’s calling off the VIP list, they’re only to put calls through to you at times when you tell them you take calls.
Next, instead of your office desk, take over the conference room in your office and work there during planned time blocks so that moment you’re there, you got a purpose. Money making activity. If you wish, put a conference table in your office space now, take all the file cabinets and any other storage related elements and put them in your assistants office or purge the cabinets, buy a scanner and have your support staff go paperless.
Third, get a good cell phone that you can sync with your computer and use it from wherever you are, either at your conference table or at Starbucks. Turn your office
into a marketing center with your laptop, phone, and conference table to meet others
for appointments and dazzle them.
Do not handle email all day, just two times day for about 30 minutes each time, if more than this, you need to delegate handling emails and setting up filters with your assistant team. In addition delegate scheduling to your assisting team so that you can liason to your calendar as they set appointments while you’re doing marketing activity.
Schedule 1 (24) period per week (8 hour work day) which is thematically geared toward administration. This is when you’re in your assistant’s office and working only on elements related to delegation and detail work from your conference table, nothing else. Think of this process like clearing off all the stuff intensively in one single day to make the whole week go efficiently.
When you make a choice to get rid of your office, you begin to get creative in ways you didn’t before. You think of everything you MUST delegate, because you’re kicked out of being the work that defines you. If you’re doing paperwork, you’re a customer service person, filing, you’re a clerical worker. Not anymore once you’re cold turkey cutoff from
If you’re going to be a true entrepreneur, one who takes a level of resources from a lower level to higher level of productivity, dislodge from your office, become a mobile results machine and organize your work around conversations. This is what you get paid for, get bigger better, faster, and stronger as you create value through this avenue in your business.
